2010 Imagery Now Available Online

After a lot of hard work, we now have the 2010 statewide imagery online. We're very excited to make this available so that everyone can use it. In case you weren't aware, the entire state was flown last year to provide a seamless statewide coverage of 6 inch, true color imagery. You can get more information about it by visiting the NC OneMap GeoSpatial Portal and searching on "image service."

We are providing a couple of options to access the imagery. The first option (and the one that we strongly recommend) is to use it as an image service.  Users of ArcGIS desktop can connect to the image server using ArcCatalog (http://imagery.nconemap.com/arcgis/services"), selecting the "2010_Orthoimagery" service, and adding it to ArcMap. It's that easy! Users of other software clients can access it as a OGC web map service (WMS).  The urls and links are provided in the information contained in the NC OneMap GeoSpatial Portal.  The cool thing about using it as an image service is that you get immediate access to the imagery in the projection you need. In other words, the server will return the imagery in the desired projection automatically.  Secondly, it prevents users from having to go through the mundane task of finding their area of interest, waiting for the download to process, and then storing it locally. By using the service, the imagery is just another layer in your application, software, or map document. Lastly, it allows users to access all of the data (i.e., no size restrictions) for the entire state.

Of course, we are also allowing users to download the data. The imagery is provided  as tiff (with jpeg compression) which has implications for appropriate uses. You can get more information by visiting the Geospatial Portal or taking a look at the FAQ.  We are limiting the size of the downloads to about twenty tiles (approx. 18 sq. miles). To download the imagery, visit the NC OneMap GeoSpatial Portal and click on the "download imagery" tab. Zoom in to the area of interest, select the "draw polygon" tool, drag a box, enter your email address, and you will be notified once the imagery is ready for download.

We've recently posted a FAQ that should answer most common questions about how to use the imagery.  If we've missed one then please let us know.

We encourage you to subscribe to the RSS feed of this blog or check back regularly to keep up on the latest developments.

The 2010 image service is working wonderfully! It is just as fast as image services that we have on our local servers. Thanks for making this amazing statewide resource so readily available!!!

Thank you for making the 2010 image service available, we added it to our interactive map viewer on the day that you made it available. It works great, amazingly fast, saved us the burden of caching and serving the images ourselves. I would encourage others to use this service. Keep up the good work!

Love the 2010 6-inch High-Res imagery! Very nice. I easily added it as an ArcGIS Server in ArcCatalog (10.0). It comes up quickly in ArcMap and I zoomed/panned around with ease. Love the imagery detail. Thanks so much!
