Map Interface Allows for USGS Topo Map Download

One of the things we've heard from NC OneMap geospatial portal users is that searches can be cluttered with numerous US Topo map search results. In part this is because each topo map was cataloged with its own metadata record within the geoportal. A general search string, or a geographic search spread over a large area, would result in many topo map hits filling the search results pane.
This has been rectified by utilizing an ArcGIS.com web map that contains a USGS map service. The map service references a download URL for each US Topo (i.e. GeoPDF) in North Carolina (well, in the USA to be exact but let's stick with NC). Users simply click on the topo of interest and then click on the map thumbnail to have the GeoPDF (delivered in a ZIP file) downloaded to their desktop. The reasons for going this route are:
- Search results are not cluttered.
- Better interface for users to download the GeoPDF they need. No longer do they need to find the topo file name in a list of 800+ others on the NC OneMap FTP site.
- Users are guaranteed the latest version of the topo map. It is coming from USGS, the source.
- No data redundancy.
