What does this data set describe?

Title: 2000 Census Tracts
Abstract:
The NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, using TIGER/line 2000 files and statistics from the US Department of Commerce/Bureau of the Census, developed the GIS 2000 Census Tract data sets for each of the 100 counties in North Carolina and combined the data into one statewide coverage.
Supplemental_Information:
Revisions and updates to this layer include: 1) filename: ctb2000 The 4/17/2002 version was the first version of this dataset 2) filename: CensusTracts2000.shp includes a correction of the Hispanic population values which were inadvertently calculated as identical to total population. August 29, 2008.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 2000 (process 1 of 2)
2000 Census TIGER line files were downloaded from the Census Bureau website (www.census.gov). Note: Selected variables by blockfrom Census 2000 Summary File 1 were furnished by the NC State Data Center.

    Date: 2000 (process 2 of 2)
2000 TIGER/Line files from the Census Bureau website were converted to an ARC/INFO coverage format using TIGERTOOL. A unique id was generated for each block, block group, tract and place based on the following: Block: [State FIPS (37)] [County FIPS 1 to 199 odd, 3-digit] [Tract, 6-digit] [Block, 4-digit] Block Group: [State FIPS (37)] [County FIPS 1 to 199 odd, 3-digit] [Tract, 6-digit] [Block group, 1-digit] Tract: [State FIPS (37)] [County FIPS 1 to 199 odd, 3-digit] [Tract, 6-digit] Place [5-digit place id, unique to North Carolina] To create tract coverages, the TIGER Line files were then dissolved on tract, cleaned and projected from NAD27 feet to NAD83 meters projection. The individual county tract coverages were then appended to create a statewide tract coverage. Selected attributes were joined to the statewide coverage from Census 2000 Summary File 1.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The digital files from the Census Bureau were converted into ARC/INFO files. Selected attributes were joined to the TIGER files from the Census 2000 Summary File 1. Each county coverage was checked against county census block grid maps on the Census Bureau website (www.census.gov Maps=>Map Products=>Census2000 block maps=>st37_northcarolina).

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

With the exception of dissolving polygons and projecting data, no other positional changes were made by NC CGIA.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

Linework for the 2000 Census files is based predominantly on the Census Bureau's TIGER Line files. The coverages were dissolved on the tract item and selected attributes joined from the 2000 Summary File 1 by NC CGIA.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

The ARC/INFO files have been "cleaned" and "built" to ensure complete topology.
