Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: WRC Gamelands
Abstract:
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Commission and the NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the GIS data set, WRC Game Lands, to enhance management and planning, citing and impact analysis in areas directly affecting WRC Game Lands. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission assumed sole responsibility for all updates to the data set after the May 1999 update. The current updates enable the user to identify all publicly-owned Game Lands managed by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 1990 (process 1 of 9)
The original boundaries of the publicly owned Game Lands in North Carolina were recompiled from the "Hunting and Fishing Maps for North Carolina Game Lands, 1989-90" onto USGS 1:100,000-scale topographic maps. The linework was digitized by NCCGIA then it was checked by light table review. Any necessary corrections were made and new check plots were run. Post processing involved edgematching and mapjoining across map borders to create the final statewide data set.

1999 boundary updates and additions were incorporated into the file from various sources: digital data files from diskette, paper maps showing general location (boundaries input from coincident road and hydrography features using Arcedit), paper maps showing metes and bounds coordinates (boundaries input using a menu-driven program acquired from the State Property office), etc. The diskettes and maps were supplied by the Wildlife Resources Commission. NC Wildlife Resources Commission supplies CGIA with updates yearly.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission originally delineated the Game Lands onto mylar overlays mapped at 1:100,000 scale. NC CGIA digitized these areas and attributed them with Game Land name, type, owner, and public or private status. Attributes were checked by WRC staff. Subsequent updates and additions were made as previously outlined.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

Game Lands were originally marked on 1:100,000 USGS dlg overlays, which meet National Map Accuracy Standards, using a best estimate with reference to surrounding features. Boundaries drawn were digitized and check plots used to ensure correct boundary location. Subsequent updates have been incorporated using a variety of methods including GPS, digitizing from aerial photography, and cadastral boundary information.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

These data represent all publicly-owned and managed Game Lands, or those managed cooperatively as Game Lands by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission and as outlined in the "Hunting and Fishing Maps for North Carolina Game Lands" publication.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for arc and polygon topology using the "build" command. The data set was then cleaned with a fuzzy tolerance of 1 foot. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean. Subsequent additions have been acquired from a combination of county parcel data, digitizing from aerial photos, GPS information, and boundary estimations.
