Abstract:

NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis developed the digital Hospital Locations data from hospital addresses provided by the State Center for Health Statistics This file enables users to identify hospital locations. This data covers the entire extent of North Carolina.

Purpose:

This data was created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

a) The following hospital points and attributes were added:
Ashe Memorial Hospital (Ashe County), Chowan Hospital (Chowan County),

(Nash County), Pitt County Memorial Hospital (Pitt County), Roanoke-
Chowan Hospital (Hertford County), Sandhills Regional Medical Center
(Richmond County), Taylor Hospital and Extended Care Facility
(Carteret County), The Outer Banks Hospital (Dare County), Union
Regional Medical Center (Union County), and Washington County
Hospital (Washington County).
b) The following hospital points were moved (with address, city

and Caswell Center (Lenoir County).
c) The following hospital point was deleted (hospital has closed):
Sloop Memorial Hospital (Avery County).  There were two points
for Brunswick Hospital - the one named 'Columbia Brunswick Hospital'
was deleted.  There were two points for Presbyterian Specialty
Hospital - the one named 'Columbia Specialty Hospital' was deleted.
NOTE: These changes were made after consulting with hospital
employees by phone.
d) The phone attributes were added where missing (except for the
Dare County hospital whose license is pending).
e) Hospital names were updated as needed from list supplied by
the Division of Facility Services / Medical Facilities Planning
Section.  (This office was the source for the aforementioned
updates as well.)
e) The zip code attributes were added where missing.  (The source
of the zip codes was Geographic Data Technologies road files.)

These hospitals were then researched on the web (www.yellowpages.net). The yellowpages website search for hospitals in North Carolina yielded a detailed list, with individual maps of each hospital's location. These locations were then added to the hospital coverage interactively, using GDT roads as a backcover. This digital file is updated as changes occur.
