Why was the data set created?

These data were created to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

    None (source 1 of 1)
State Library of North Carolina, 20030521, Independent Colleges and Universities: State Library of North Carolina, Raleigh, North Carolina.

    Other_Citation_Details: Generated at NCCGIA
    Type_of_Source_Media: Paper
    Source_Contribution: Independent Colleges and Universities

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    Date: 10-Jul-2003 (process 1 of 5)
Point locations were generated using geocoding in Arcview from the independent college and university address list provided by The State Library of North Carolina. Points that could not be generated using geocoding were added interactively in Arcview using mapquest.com, Topozone, and 1996 Dgital Orthophotography. This digital file is updated as changes occur.

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

The attributes were loaded into the GIS from data supplied by the NC State Library. Minimal QC was performed during the digitization process on attributes. The values in the State Library of North Carolina data are reliable.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

The majority of independent colleges and universities were generated using geocoding in Arcview. The point generated in the processing would be snapped to the road identified in the address field. Therefore, point locations are coincident with the GDT roads data.

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

These data represent the locations of independent colleges and universities in North Carolina as provided by the State Library of North Carolina. The locations were either address-matched using ArcView geocoding or matched manually using the best available techniques. These data do not contain all the independent colleges and universities in North Carolina.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Using ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, the dataset was built for point topology using the "build" command. Topology has not been edited since the last build or clean.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?

Access_Constraints: None
Use_Constraints:
